About Vulamathuba Empumelelo
Vulamathuba Empumelelo is the community and social development division of Communicare, dedicated to empowering tenants and nearby communities through socio-economic initiatives. The organization administers the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary Fund (VEBF), which supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuing tertiary qualifications in critical and scarce skill areas.
Fields of Study Covered
The bursary available to students residing within Cape Metro Region (Cape Town), for undergraduate studies within fields that are declared scarce or critical skills by the government.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary provides partial financial support for:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees (up to R40,000)
- Prescribed textbooks and academic resources (up to R5,000)
- Examination fees (if applicable)
Additional benefits:
- Quarterly mentorship
Selection and Renewal
Bursaries are awarded annually and are subject to renewal at Vulamathuba Empumelelo’s discretion. Successful applicants must sign a bursary agreement.
- Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 3 February 2025.
- If no feedback is received within two months of the closing date, consider the application unsuccessful.
Eligibility Requirements for the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Bursary 2025
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship: South African citizen, Permanent Residency holder, or Work Visa holder.
- Residence: Residing within the Cape Metro Region.
- Community: Must be a Communicare tenant or from a previously marginalized community.
- Age: Between 19 and 50 years old.
- Education: Completed Matric.
- Enrollment: Studying or accepted for part-time/full-time undergraduate studies in a scarce/critical skills field at a South African public institution (TVET College or University).
- Financial Need: Gross household income of R400,000 or less annually (validated through a means test).
- Academic and Personal Qualities: Demonstrated academic potential, enthusiasm, strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to volunteer.
- Preference: Priority is given to Communicare tenants and authorized residents, followed by community members from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Step 2: Submit Supporting Documents
Ensure all documents are certified within the last six months:
- ID document or passport
- Permanent Residency Permit or Work Visa (if applicable)
- Matric certificate and latest academic results
- Proof of registration or acceptance for 2025 (on institution letterhead)
- Proof of residence
- Certified copies of ID documents for all household members
- Recent bank statements (3 months) for all household members
- Proof of income for all household members (e.g., payslips, affidavits if unemployed)
- Relevant court or legal orders (if applicable)
- Death or marriage certificates (if applicable)
- Motivational essay (minimum 250 words)
Closing Date
Applications close on 31 January 2025. Late applications will not be considered. Apply early to avoid disqualification.
