The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation warmly invites students to apply for its competitive Undergraduate, Matriculant and Part-Time bursary programmes designed for the 2025 academic year. These bursaries aim to support and empower aspiring individuals in the field of food science and technology, providing them with essential financial assistance to further their education and pursue their career goals. The programme comprises three types of bursaries:
- SAAFoST Matriculant Bursary: For matriculants planning to study full-time toward an undergraduate degree or diploma. More information here

- SAAFoST Part-Time Bursary: For paid-up SAAFoST members studying part-time toward a BSc Hons or BTech. More information here
About SAAFoST
The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to advancing food science and technology in South Africa. The organization supports education, research, and knowledge sharing within the food and allied industries through initiatives such as workshops, seminars, publications, and bursary programmes. SAAFoST is operated by volunteers and serves approximately 2000 members across Southern Africa.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary covers tuition fees up to R40,000 per annum and is paid directly to the tertiary institution in two instalments. The second instalment depends on satisfactory first-semester results.
Eligibility Requirements for the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2025
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Reside in South Africa for at least 3 years before applying.
- Have completed Matric.
- Be enrolled full-time in a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa, pursuing a first undergraduate degree or diploma in Food Science and Technology.
- Be entering their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study in 2025.
- Be a SAAFoST member for at least 12 months before applying.
- Demonstrate strong academic results or potential.

Steps to Apply
- Download and complete the SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary Application Form:
- Prepare the following supporting documents (all certified where applicable):
- ID document or passport.
- Recent passport-sized photo.
- Latest tertiary academic results.
- Proof of registration for the 2025 academic year.
- Matric results.
- A personal statement (max 1 A4 page) detailing your aspirations and potential impact on the food science sector.
- Reference letter from a tertiary institution representative.

Important Notes
- Bursary recipients are required to submit semi-annual reports and results to SAAFoST.
- Non-compliance with the bursary terms may result in the bursary being converted into a repayable loan.
