The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is inviting students to apply for the GCRA Bursary, for the 2025 academic year.
About GCRA
The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) is a division of the Gauteng Department of Education, which focuses on skill development within the Gauteng province. By facilitating bursaries, internships, learnerships, and career guidance programs, the GCRA aims to empower students and promote educational opportunities in the region.
Fields of Study Covered
This bursary is open to students residing in Gauteng who are pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies in any field.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary covers:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Accommodation:
- On-campus (up to R65,000)
- Off-campus/private (up to R47,000)
- Books, a laptop, and a living allowance for off-campus/private accommodation.
Selection:
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 3–4 weeks after the application closing date. If no feedback is received after 4 weeks, consider your application unsuccessful.
Eligibility Requirements for the GCRA Bursary 2025
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen, aged 18–35 years.
- Reside in Gauteng.
- Have completed matric in Gauteng.
- Be accepted/registered for undergraduate or postgraduate studies in 2025.
- Study at an accredited Post School Education and Training (PSET) institution in South Africa, including universities, TVET colleges, and private colleges.
Preference is given to fields aligned with GGT2030 priority sectors:
- Arts and Design
- Finance, Economics, and Accounting
- Engineering (Electrical and Civil)
- Hospitality Management
- IT and Computer Science
- Mechanical and Automotive Engineering
- Tourism, Transport, and Logistics
Automatic Qualification Criteria:
- Top achievers at Gauteng-based schools.
- Top 3 learners from no-fee schools.
- Top 3 learners from LSEN (Learners with Special Education Needs) schools.
Required Documents
Submit clear, certified copies of:
- ID document.
- Matric certificate.
- Recent academic record (if applicable).
- Proof of registration/acceptance at a PSET institution.
- Proof of Gauteng residence.
- Motivational letter (max. 2 pages).
- Disability/medical report (if applicable).
- Parents/guardians’ income proof or affidavit (if unemployed).
- Proof of other bursaries (if applicable).
Ensure all documents are labeled correctly, saved as PDFs, and under 2MB.
How to Apply for the GCRA Bursary 2025
Applications must be submitted online via the GCRA Bursary 2025 Application platform.

- Create an account and log in.
- Fill in your personal profile (personal details, matric results, and guardian information).
- Provide tertiary education details, upload documents, and agree to terms.
Application Types Explained:
- New Intake: First-time applicants.
- Renewal: Previously funded students reapplying.
- Reinstatement: Bursary reinstatement after suspension.
- Top Achievers: Recognition for academic excellence.
- Top 3 Achievers: Learners from no-fee or LSEN schools.
- MEC/HOD/Veteran Discretion: Applicants referred by authorities or veterans.
- Financial Assistance/Top-Ups: Partial funding for existing bursaries.
