These bursaries aim to support and empower aspiring individuals in the field of food science and technology, providing them with essential financial assistance to further their education and pursue their career goals. The programme comprises three types of bursaries:
- SAAFoST Matriculant Bursary: For matriculants planning to study full-time toward an undergraduate degree or diploma. More information here

- SAAFoST Part-Time Bursary: For paid-up SAAFoST members studying part-time toward a BSc Hons or BTech.
About SAAFoST
The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to advancing food science and technology in South Africa. The organization supports education, research, and knowledge sharing within the food and allied industries through initiatives such as workshops, seminars, publications, and bursary programmes. SAAFoST is operated by volunteers and serves approximately 2000 members across Southern Africa.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary covers:
- Tuition fees (as per the institution’s account) up to R40,000, pro-rata over two years.
- Payments are made directly to the institution in two instalments, conditional on satisfactory first-semester results.
Eligibility Requirements for the SAAFoST Part-Time Bursary 2025
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Have resided in South Africa for at least 3 years before applying.
- Have completed Matric.
- Be pursuing part-time studies in Food Science and Technology (BSc Honours or BTech).
- Be enrolled at a recognized and accredited South African tertiary institution.
- Complete studies within the prescribed period (max 2 years for BTech and 3 years for BSc Honours).
- Be a fully paid-up SAAFoST member for at least 12 months before applying.
- Demonstrate strong academic potential.

- Certified copy of ID or passport.
- Passport-sized photo.
- Certified copy of recent tertiary academic results.
- Certified copy of BSc or National Diploma results and certificate.
- Personal statement (max 1 page) explaining how the education will positively impact the food science community and your life.
- Proof of 2023 registration (on institutional letterhead).

Important Notes
- Recipients must submit biannual progress reports, exam results, and details of SAAFoST activity participation.
- The bursary may be converted into a repayable loan if:
- A semester or year is failed.
- Studies are interrupted or incomplete.
- A course change occurs.
- The bursary committee will announce successful applicants in February 2023.
