About Gallagher Foundation

Established in 2001 by Ellen and Jerry Gallagher, the Gallagher Foundation provides scholarships to university students in South Africa, Mexico, and Turkey. The foundation awarded its first scholarships in 2002 in South Africa, expanding to Mexico in 2004 and Turkey in 2005.

The foundation aims to empower young leaders who are committed to fostering peace and prosperity in their developing countries.

Scholarships are awarded for studies at:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa
  • ITESM Monterrey Campus, Mexico
  • Boğaziçi University, Turkey

Fields of Study Covered

The Scholarship is available for undergraduate studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in any field, including 4-year degree programmes and the 6-year medical programme.

This full scholarship covers:

Eligibility Requirements for the Gallagher Foundation Scholarship 2025

To qualify, applicants must meet these requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Maintain a strong academic record.
  • Be admitted to UCT for 2025, with final acceptance confirmed.
  • Be enrolled in a 4-year programme or 6-year medical degree.
  • Enter their first year of study in 2025.
  • Achieve a minimum overall average of 60%.
  • Obtain high scores in all sections of the National Benchmark Test.
  • Demonstrate financial need and provide supporting proof.
  • Exhibit high ethical values, such as:
    • Commitment to non-violent progress.
    • A dedication to improving their country.
    • Alignment with the Gallagher Foundation Traits of Distinguished Leaders.
  • Show leadership potential, demonstrated through:
    • Special projects.
    • Awards received.
    • Extracurricular activities or community service.
  • Apply for NSFAS funding.
  • Not receive any other scholarship funding, except merit-based awards.

Required Supporting Documents

  • High school results.
  • UCT final acceptance letter.
  • National Benchmark Test scores.
  • Recommendation letter (e.g., from a teacher, mentor, or employer, excluding family members).
  • Parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (e.g., payslips, unemployment affidavits, or pension documents).
  • Four short essays:
    1. Describe a failure and what you learned from it.
    2. Your vision for your country in the next 50 years and your role in achieving it.
    3. Leadership example that inspired you.
    4. Challenges you face and how you address them.
